Fox News Shepard Smith Displays Fair And Balanced Defense Of CNN Reporter Attacked By Trump
Fox News since their inception have famously carried the mantra of being “Fair and Balanced.” However, their critics frequently accused them conversely being heavily biased in their reporting to promote a conservative spin on the news, even going so far as to brand them as a propaganda apparatus for the Republican party.
Critics notwithstanding, in the aftermath of President Elect Donald Trump’s silencing of credentialed CNN White House reporter Jim Acosta and subsequent verbal attack of calling him and the network that employs him “fake news,” Shepard Smith came to the defense of Jim Acosta and CNN in following an appropriate journalistic standard in their reporting of the controversial security briefing that included an unverified intelligence report of Russian operatives having obtained compromising information on the President Elect. Stated Smith:
“Though we at FOX News cannot confirm CNN’s report, it is our observation that its correspondents followed journalistic standards and that neither they nor any other journalists should be subjected to belittling and delegitimizing by the President Elect of the United States.”
CNN for its part, issued a statement that that responsibly chose not to publish the 35 page document that has yet to be independently confirm and distanced themselves from Buzzfeed’s decision to do so:
“We made it clear that we were not publishing any of the details of the 35-page document because we have not corroborated the report’s allegations,” the statement continued. “Given that members of the Trump transition team have so vocally criticized our reporting, we encourage them to identify, specifically, what they believe to be inaccurate.”
In a prepared statement last night that is unusual for an intelligence chief to engage in with the public, while condemning the intelligence leak which he assured did not come from the intelligence community, Intelligence Director James Clapper acknowledges the existence of the document that CNN reported on, corroborating their reporting.
This revelation not only accentuates the inappropriateness and some would recklessness of the President Elect’s treatment of a credentialed reports, but it justifies Shepherd Smith’s defense of him and the network he works for.
